Jim Handley MBACP
My Personal ApproachPsychotherapy helps us to develop parts of ourselves that we can use so we feel more in control of our lives. The foundation of my work is humanistic, which means I view the individual as a whole person. My approach is to work with the individual's own experience as a basis for self knowledge.
My TrainingI have completed over 1000 hours of professional training in group and individual therapy at Spectrum, a UKCP (United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists) accredited centre of excellence in Humanistic Psychotherapy, where I now work as a practitioner. The training at Spectrum is rigorous and I have completed in-depth courses in anger management, relationship skills, sexual abuse, family therapy, gestalt therapy, formative psychology, and sexuality. I am a fully trained couples counsellor.
I am an accredited member of the
BACP and adhere to their code of ethics.
My ExperienceI have worked extensively as a psychotherapist in private practice, in a secondary school and for a charity providing counselling to adults in distress. I have also worked for Southampton social services, running a mixed therapy group and a parenting group and for the probation services in Hampshire running groups for perpetrators of domestic violence.I have three areas of specialisation: working with relationships, working with anger and working with men. Before training as a therapist I worked in industry. During this time I learned a lot about how people interact and function in the workplace. I am married with three children.
